A theatre and film director, she holds a degree in ethnography from the University of Warsaw and has worked in theatres in Warsaw, Białystok, Nowa Huta, and Poznań. In 1969, she became director of the theatre in Kalisz, and in 1973, she became director of the Nowy Theatre in Poznań. From 1989 to 1991, she served as Minister of Culture and Art in Tadeusz Mazowiecki's government. In 1991, she returned to directing in theatre and television. From 2008 to 2011, she was artistic director of the Ateneum Theatre in Warsaw.
Since March 25, 2024, the Nowy Theatre in Poznań has borne her name.
